Designed by James A. Whelpley and patented in 1884, these skates used a unique clamping mechanism to attach to standard shoes and were manufactured until 1898. This large scale display would have been used by the shop owners to show prospective buyers how the skate would have been used and adjusted to the individual shoe size of the customer.

The skate was so successful that by 1891, they were producing an astounding 1000 pairs daily. Due to the overwhelming demand, the company moved their manufacturing operations to Marlborough MA (Boston MA), with the top of the toe clamp stamped HA Whittemore Boston Mass.
